Do you reach me if you stretch?
Individual project
Is self-developed, high-density housing the answer? Or: can housing be simultaneously affordable, equitable, & viable?
In developing this project, I reached two conclusions:
1. Economic stratification is unavoidable in housing. Even in self-developed projects, it is impossible for any single architectural framework to be simultaneously high-density, adaptable, and meaningfully appealing: Equitability cannot be reconciled with economic viability.
2. The United States is incompatible with affordable self-development; projects need independently wealthy sponsors to ever get off the ground.
Do you reach me if you stretch? seeks to illustrate the extent to which the world must warp in pursuit of affordable self-developed housing in the United States.
