Panyaden International School Sports Hall: Study Model

This project was a study model of the sports hall at Panyaden International School, designed by Chiangmai Life Construction. Our model was built at a 1:50 scale using basswood, dowels, and twine, intended to replicate the curvature and joinery of the original design.

Two primary challenges characterized the fabrication of this model: first, recreating the curvature of the original structure, and second, joining our components without the use of glue. Ultimately we achieved accurately curved members through the use of molds for doubly curved elements and templates for singly curved elements. Dowels were first soaked in water for a few hours, bound together with twine, then pinned into place on either a mold or template. Once dry, the wood kept its form even when released.
Joinery was a meticulously aggravating process. To replicate the bolts used in the structure, we clipped the ends off of pins to produce tiny versions of them. We then carefully attached elements to each other by puncturing holes and tweezing our bolts in, to secure, and supplemented connections with twine.
